Great location, really oldy worldly. The staff are very friendly. Comfortable chairs and sofas, very clean. Lovely outside heated area with sheepskin rugs to make the chairs snuggly.
I've given a 4 star on the service as it was quite slow and our first coffees were only warm, not hot. However, you do get free refills, and our subsequent drinks were hot.
Would recommend, though, as a lovely place to sit, and while away an hour 👌

It was once an elegant and sophisticated establishment. Regrettably, it has now devolved into something resembling a bustling canteen, with tables crammed together, leaving little room for comfort or ambiance. The food was mediocre, the wait time was excessively long, and there was neither water nor bread offered. Frankly, it was quite insulting. Sadly, this visit will be our last. While we appreciate the memories, we shall not be returning.

I was taken to the George for a birthday meal last night and i must say that from the moment i walked in i was made to feel incredibly special and the food / service and general atmosphere and staff friendliness meant i had to best night / dinner that i have had in years. Reception staff were so helpful and warm and the resteraunt staff really went all out. Keeing to traditions meant that the evening wassn't just a culinary joy but it was also a fantastic experience from the carving at the table to watching crepes being made! I loved the theatre of it all!
I look forward to visiting again soon...this place will now be a firm fixture on my places to eat list!
Thanks again for the fab service

Went for Afternoon tea for my birthday treat, party of 5 .Got there 15 minutes early and was escorted to very small and low table, when we sat down wasn't asked if we wanted anything to drink .Also thought we were going to be moved into another room, as this felt like the foyer as staff and people kept walking about and was rather cold .When the tea came staff didn't know where to put things ,very awkward. Won't be going there again. Very over priced for what you got .

A little disappointed with the staff and the service to be honest.
We had afternoon tea outside...we're not offered blankets and they did not come out to check on those seated outside or to increase the outdoor heating thermostat.
We had to go into reception and request a blanket! Unacceptable, really!
Given the cost of afternoon...overall would not likely return when. You get better service and value for money.

A really lovely place with kind and helpful staff, a luxurious and peaceful atmosphere, and top quality food, would very much recommend.

We had Sunday lunch in the Oak room today. The staff were great. The beef was amazing. The rest of the food was lovely. The dining room was a bit cool but warmed up. For us, it’s not somewhere we can afford to go to very often but, as it was my husbands birthday it was a lovely treat. Reading all the negative comments re staff we were apprehensive but we didn’t have any problem at all.

Rude awful attitude.
We visited three restaurants this bank holiday weekend. This was the first, from which things could and did only get much better.
The senior staff consisting of two females and a male (that appeared to be the male owner / manager, a female behind the bar and a female serving) appeared indignant, irritable and at times, on the edge of exploding with rage. We felt uncomfortable and unwelcome during the entire lunch experience.
It started with rather curt and abrupt order taking from who may have been the male manager/ owner. The finale was when on leaving, our daughter paused to rearrange her jacket causing a female senior member of staff to temporarily wait who was walking behind carrying a plate. The lady stood with a tight lipped aggressive scowl. I quickly noticed, so asked my daughter to move out the way to let the lady get past, who appeared on the verge of exploding with rage. The lady passed by with no acknowledgment, even though I tried to be kind by acknowledging she had been held up. Not the end of the world, but this was another example of the senior staff attitude.
The food was expensive and average. In fairness, the junior members of staff were really nice and a complete contrast to the three senior members of the team who were simply rude.

This was a special romantic getaway just before Christmas. My boyfriend booked a four poster bedroom. Beautiful bed but the room looked too modern for it. The bathroom was lovely. Only difficulty was getting in and out of the bath as there were no grab handles and you kept slipping back into it which was quite funny for us but could pose a safety hazard for someone with mobility issues.
The restaurant setting was nice but the scallops were undercooked and the pork with prosciutto ham and cream looked like a pile of sick on the plate. I mentioned both of these things to the waitress as you pay a lot of money for this. She did say that I wasn’t the first person to mention the pork dish and that the chef would be looking at how to present it differently! We asked for an Irish floater coffee. It was awful. It was basically strong coffee with no whiskey and cream. They need to learn how to make a floater coffee! The actual restaurant experience was lovely with attentive staff.

Lovely lunch today at the George. Waitresses and restaurant manager were extremely attentive and my elderly dad who has just lost his wife was very happy for the interactions. Beautiful food too, thank you!

Sad to write this but after going to The George for many years for Christmas Lunch the quality of food and menu was very disappointing coupled with increasing prices (expect this but that George experience has gone) The barman had no festive cheer, the oak room and lounge areas had minimal decorations compared to previous years, mainly the staff were ok but again loss of past service.
Very saddening to see the once jewel of Stamford losing its shine.

We arrived for afternoon tea, we joined the queue, after a 20 min wait the matre` D came over and asked if we could sit on the terrace!!!! We was mid queue, so why aim for myself and 2 friends? Because we didn't look rich enough to sit amongst the wealthy! It was poor service from beginning to end and massively overpriced!!!! Our money is hard earned and as good as the next person's, you should be ashamed of singling people out!!!!

Sadly The George doesn't live up to it's reputation these days. We recently ate in the Oak Pannelled Dining room, we had to pour our own wine as the waiting staff seemed oblivious to empty glasses. The roast beef was delicious and the accompanying vegetables tasty. Sadly the cherry chocolate roulade tasted as if it had been bought in (mass produced) & lacked the sour cherry tang and the chocolate was disappointingly insipid. The cheese souffle we had to start was ok, rather overpowered by the mustard sauce. We had to request the biscuits to accompany our coffee.
The Christmas decorations were not as opulent as previous years. The waiting team were all pleasant but seemed inexperienced and unable to deliver a high quality service. The bill was not insignificant and did not match the experience.
Shame really, because the building is impressive and there is a huge opportunity to enhance the ambience and without doubt the service needs to be elevated. This being said we will most probably revisit in the summer as the outside courtyard is lovely.

Buyer beware!
I just wanted to make people aware of my experience at the hotel this week.
Having friends staying with us from Cheshire, we decided to take them to the hotel for a glass of Mulled Wine and then a look around Stamford.
Without asking the price of the four Mulled Wines, I order and they duly arrived.
They were nice but we have had better. What was disappointing was that the glasses were all filled with different amounts of the wine, between 1/2 and 3/4 full. They were served in a latte glass.
Sat chatting we ordered four more and so I asked that they were a full glass this time. When these arrived they to were again filled to various levels.
Now this was not the real issue. The issue was when I went to pay I had a bill for £72 for eight glasses of mulled wine. That’s £9 per glass!!!!
I have never paid anywhere like this amount for a glass of Mulled Wine. Not even in London.
So if you pop in to The George Hotel of Stamford. Please be aware!

When we arrive couldn’t get into car park! We had to park in the train station and pay, they said they would give us this back when we checked in.one room was not ready so friends put there case in ours , we went to the bar while waiting for friends room to be ready.
I did say to reception that I’d paid parking and late for friends to get into room, so could we have complement drink! He said he would ask his boss.. they never got back to us so we take it he said no! But I never got my car payment back.. the room was clean , warm but thick cover which I didn’t like, it was very heavy.. I understand there trying to be traditional but it’s not for us and no tea/ coffee making in the room but when we checked in he offered us tea and coffee in a morning before breakfast, we did miss having a kettle . Didn’t realise they don’t have them in the room. Staff were very friendly and food on the evening was truly amazing, great staff service.
Olivia, and two sisters were a credit to the service.
Breakfast was agian delicious and great service. Friend shower head didn’t work I found out. Not sure I’d stay again, just fell short a bit for the price we paid for the rooms.

The George is a beautiful building and place to visit however for the last few times we’ve popped in for a coffee the service has been poor. It’s possible to sit and not get served at all - everyone around us had to ask for service and the lady in charge of our area (champagne bar?) really didn’t want to serve customers and was quite officious. It’s a shame as it is a lovely venue. Hopefully the other areas are better managed.

We visited today and reserved a table in the Garden Room. It's been quite a while since we last had food here, and our previous experience was excellent. Unfortunately, today was not that great. The service was unprofessional and clearly in need of improvement.
We ordered two Sirloin Steaks – one medium rare and one rare. It seems the waiter may have misheard the kitchen, as he told us both steaks were medium rare. My partner didn’t mind, but after taking a bite, he realized he had actually received the rare steak, which was the correct one. Additionally, I was served the wrong sauce – I ordered Béarnaise, but was given pepper sauce. Once the Béarnaise arrived, it was cold, and the top had hardened. I asked the waiter if that was normal and he replied saying he couldn't heat it up because the sauce will split...
We also ordered broccoli stems, which were served cold. When we asked for a replacement, they returned the same broccoli, simply microwaved which was disappointing (I am still wondering how can you serve it cold? Even if you put it in boiling water for 10 seconds it would still be hot).
In a more casual or budget-friendly restaurant, we might not mind these issues so much, but The George has always been known for its high standards, both in food and service, which is why we expected much better – especially given the price we paid.
Though I had a lovely time with great company, I am unlikely to return for the food.

A return to the George after many family visits years ago. Unfortunately the service has declined. We were a table of 4 seated close to the bar. Many staff serving and pouring drinks but not one brought menus or looked in our direction for 20 minutes. I asked for menus but even this wasnt enough to warrant staff asking for our order or speaking to us to let us know they were busy. The George, once known for its impeccable service is no longer the George that I remember.

We didn't stay here our stop was mainly for dinner. We had our dinner in one of their food areas called " The Garden Room" which is a less formal restaurant but still offers a comfortable setting for dining. We went for dinner in mid November and the restaurant was decorated with Christmas trees and lights which was a good touch. Service was great and staff always made sure we got everything that we needed. We ordered fish pie and sea bass which was well cooked and delicious. For dessert we had sticky toffee pudding and cream caramel which was okay. I found dessert quite expensive but what was given. Once you pay higher value you expect some decorations or added value food.
Overall I enjoyed it.

Everything about our experience when hosting a reception in The Lambert Room last week has been first class. From the reception and reservations teams to the welcoming staff on arrival and specifically Jane who looked after our party have been incredibly professional and friendly. Not to mention the food and wine - excellent and very fairly priced. The fact that The George still doesn't expect a deposit when booking, instantly assures you that the event is going to be a wonderful experience. Thank you everyone!
